My Son’s A Queer (But what can you do?)

Before the internet, children uninterested in sport - but fascinated by performing arts - had only chance meetings with like-minded other children, being able to afford a drama club, or the school play.

Particularly if you were a little boy, bullying by peers and a lonely school life were almost inevitable. Still are, probably worse now they can get at the victims online 24/7.

Yet people like Rob Madge somehow believed in their own Magic Kingdom – literally – and won through to share their joyous and deeply moving tale.

The phenomenon that they are presents a sort of musical “This Is Your Life” in just over an hour of home video (George Reeve expertly designing), perfect anthemic music by Pippa Cleary and a fabulously fantasy home set and madcap outfits by Ryan Dawson Laight.

Madge sips from a “Beauty and the Beast” “Chip” mug (where did they find it, need one!) and watches their younger self convert their childhood home into Disneyland – Granny getting a “teacup ride” on an office spinning chair, as she waits for the parade to begin...

... there’s a snag. His supportive family try hard, but Dad mises his cue, and it all goes wrong... Years later, can an experienced and much-loved West End Star now re-create it and get it right...

You bet.

In a blizzard of impressively researched and up-to-date musical theatre references (some obvious, a good few truly for aficionados only) and quips, we get an entirely absorbing autobiography.

Far more than that, we get life lessons about courage, determination and what acceptance means to the person who knows they are different and is seeking it.

Bravado, yes. Survivor instinct through determination, yes. A truly deserved status as an evolving performing legend-in-the-making, yes.

Also, a unique and almost mythical being so deeply scarred and wounded and trying to heal that we must find and give all the compassion possible.

The show works not because it is entertaining, and not because this sickening rawness infuses every word.

It is because Madge is teaching, educating and explaining. They are willing to share the personal cost, giving us a truly magical and highly personal gift forged to perfection in the fires they went through.

This is apparently the last ever run of the show. It is only an hour of your time, and it is one you will regret – deeply – if you do not spend it in their company.

Standing ovation given.
