Monkey understands that most Edinburgh Fringe Festival shows run around 50 minutes – which lets venues programme hourly slots to squeeze shows in.
This one would have done well to keep to that length, rather than over-stretch what is a clever idea into one that outstays its welcome by around half an hour.
Danielle Steers and Morgan Gregory (Earth / Humanity) sing and dance the hell out of Jack Godfrey’s sometimes strikingly tuneful and witty music and lyric.
Book writer and director Ellie Coote comes up with a fun situation and turns the relationship drama needle to “high,” but it all becomes a little ponderous and then forced as her concept strains to be released from the logic it is encased in.
Steers opens the show in full “Six” mode, sassy and upbeat with accessible yet intellectual word play.
Within a couple of verses, though, the lethal fracture in the show is apparent. The song goes on far too long, introducing detail we do not need and piling intolerable pressure on the setup.
Every subsequent number has the identical fault. Starts with something promising to be memorable, gets bogged down in earnestness rather than being genuinely entertaining.
For every flash of genius, there are ten less than concise lines. Rather than take a tour through eons, it should have been possible to focus on far smaller snapshots from a quite engaging relationship.
Shankho Chaudhuri’s ever-more-cluttered podium set is subtle and brilliant, the punning book titles hilarious for those who can read them (7 what?).
Ryan Joseph Stafford creates the best comet effect ever from a strip of LED bulbs, and Paul Gatehouse is a wizard at letting us catch every word against Sara De Sanctis’s lively 3-piece band.
This is not an interminable “green” lecture – in fact, that is only the closing minutes – and it is both lively and amusing at times.
Sadly, it is not quite as inventive in execution as its concept promises. With a sharp cut or three, though, it could be... if we all survive that long...
