(seen at the afternoon performance on 14th May 2026)
That the monkey learned far more, in greater detail and less time, about Ellen Terry and Henry Irving from reading the programme than watching David Hare’s woeful biographical play says it all.
Lighting designer Peter Mumford manages to turn one character into Shrek with some horribly focussed green lighting, and the bilious colour sums up the entire enterprise.
Hare is a highly experienced and acclaimed writer, so how does he explain a construction that takes an hour of lukewarm sparring between Ralph Fiennes (floundering for credibility) as Henry Irving, and a (horribly miscast) Miranda Raison as Ellen Terry as act one; then descends into time-shifting porridge – mainly about her children - for act two?
Jeremy Herrin loses his directorial touch with badly paced scenes burning Shakespearean soliloquies to cinders, and having Terry’s children Edith and Edward Gordon Craig (Ruby Ashbourne Serkis and Jordan Metcalfe, respectively) address regularly the audience to update us on their nepo-baby lives. Which are maybe more interesting than their mother’s, but pull focus away from the central idea.
Not in fact a bad idea as distraction in the end, as an horrifically amusing death-bed scene proves in the final minutes.
Artistically blurry and, so, distracting, video designs (Akhila Krishnan) detract from designer Bob Crowley’s rather well-chosen furniture, which is nicely moved around the stage as required.
Irving was known for lavish productions which treated the casts well, but were seldom met with critical or financial acclaim.
On at least one of those, this production appears to have taken history literally and aims to reproduce it here. For the monkey, that is the greatest success this tediously rickety work can claim.
Upper Circle A23 on 27th April 2026. This seat is marked as restricted because of looking through a perspex screen, but you actually don't need to look through the screen. The very front of the stage is out of view unless you lean forward (which you shouldn't) meaning that on a couple of short occasions you only see the heads of a couple of characters. Most of the time, the view is fine, or what you would expect from a seat of this kind anyway. No problems with legroom at 5 foot 8. Fair old way up, and the loos are up another flight. Nice little bar up there.
Didn't really think much of the show to be honest, but wasn't terrible.
The monkey advises checking performance times on your tickets and that performances are happening as scheduled, before travelling.
