Punch

Teenager Jacob Dunne killed paramedic James Hodgkinson with a single punch during a pub altercation.
A meeting with his victim’s family changes everything.
The powerful James Graham play, developed at Nottingham Playhouse and seen in London at the Young Vic Theatre in Spring 2025 comes to the West End.

A great play performed by a great cast. Julie Hesmondhalgh was outstanding.
Sightlines from the end seat on stalls row C4 were brilliant and there is only half of a seat in front so quite spacious - I don't think there was a moment where any I couldn't see the face of the person speaking, except for one moment where a chair on stage blocked my view of Julie speaking. I would sit there again.
The seats immediately in front on the end of B obviously had massive legroom as a result of the rounded stage.

First put on at the Nottingham Playhouse and then the Young Vic before transferring to The Apollo. I suspect it suited the Young Vic stage really well, don't know about Nottingham Playhouse, as the audience would be much closer making the play even more claustrophobic than it is now. We were in the balcony quite high up so I suspect we lost some of the depth of the performances.
It's a very emotional piece, excellently written, directed and performed, David Shields as Jacob is outstanding. Definitely worth seeing.
4 stars.
