My thoughts are that it was somewhat overpriced as a tryout, but well worth attending.
Varies wildly between brilliant and hopeless. The cast were faultless, excellent lead and ensemble performances all round, no issues there at all.
They are about 70% there with the book - which works best when it follows the film in the classroom, and source book in the second half for the inter-racial relationships.
The dialogue is full of anachronisms like "epic" when something went well. I'm giving them a pass on outfits, as this isn't a fully staged thing, but the projections showed all sorts of things not invented in 1956.
The songs, one or two work very well, one solo was annoyingly just 2 verses when it should have gone somewhere.
BUT:
BIG PROBLEM: "To Sir With Love" is an iconic anthem, and nothing in the score comes even close.
The producer said they are now looking for a theatre. I think they should first be looking for an editor and backing for 2 more years rehearsal. They certainly are on to something, but this isn't quite there yet.
Keep working, I feel.
Loved the show but was so disappointed with Lulu’s performance considering that was the reason we went. Honestly, she spent her time on stage with a book containing her lines!!! And the iconic song she managed a line!
@jacky Agree on Lulu. I wonder when she did turn up to rehearse? I saw it at the matinee, where she was fluffier than a feather duster - and apparently she wasn't that much better in the evening. I sort of gave her a bye on the grounds she may not have seen the script until that day, but still...
And yes, I was expecting her to do more of her song. On the other hand, the way it was done with all the kids taking lines was pretty magical, wasn't it?
